Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory

EISCAT Sodankylä Site

EISCAT Sodankylä site has been one of the receiving sites of the incoherent scatter radar system, operated by EISCAT Scientific Association. The other sites of the tristatic system were located in Kiruna, (Sweden), in Tromsø (Norway), and ESR radars in Longyearbyen at Svalbard.

Old Sodankylä UHF-antenna built in 1978 was decommissioned in April 2025. Tromsø facility still continues operation until start of the EISCAT_3D. The new EISCAT3D site in Finland was built to Karesuando in EISCAT_3D-Finland project lead by SGO.

New EISCAT operates under EISCAT AB. The EISCAT Headquarters are located in Kiruna. Follow the steps of the EISCAT_3D project from the official EISCAT website.
