Off duty: I am off duty 1.1.2009-31.12.2011, working in Kiruna, Sweden, as the director of the EISCAT Scientific Association.

Research Interests

I did my thesis work on incoherent scatter measurements of the high latitude D-region, early 1993. (see e.g. Turunen E., EISCAT incoherent scatter radar observations and model studies of day to twilight variations in the D-region during the PCA event of August 1989, J. Atmos. Terr. Phys., 55, 4/5, 767-781, 1993). In addition to running for many years the ionosonde of the SGO, which is today taken care of by Thomas Ulich, my current research interests include:

Applications of incoherent scatter in D-region aeronomy
Ion chemistry model of the D-region
Local and global atmospheric effects due to electron precipitation and solar proton events
Heating experiments in D-region, specially the API technique
Use of ionosonde data in global change studies. This work is mostly done by my colleague Thomas Ulich.
