SGO Radio Science Laboratory Investment

Project number: A70192

Active: 1.6.2014 – 31.3.2018

Planned budget: 125,500 EUR (ERDF contribution 87,885 EUR)

The Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO) Radio Science Laboratory Model as a part of the Innovation Platform-project (RLab-model) will be implemented at the same time as the SGO’s Radio Science Investment Project (RLab-investment). Together, these projects will develop and extend the next generation of ionospheric observations and research of our geo-space environment.

The RLab-model focuses on the design of observational equipment and its application by SGO. Internal processes at SGO will be made more visible, giving greater recognition to SGO’s core areas of expertise.

The project aims to revise the riometry chain, in addition to extending the tomography measurement chain. The riometry hardware to be used is a new-generation digital software radio, based on broadband detection methods, which produce a greater variety of data on the composition and dynamics of the ionosphere. The installations will continue producing measurement data of near space for many years after the end of the project. The policy development associated with this project, provides the basis for the Arctic Geo-innovation Centre’s Applied Radio Science Laboratory operating methods.
